How to use Aim Trainer

  1. Press Start. The first target appears immediately and the clock starts with it.
  2. Hit each target as fast as you can. A new one appears the instant the last one pops.
  3. Clicks that land on empty space are counted as misses and reduce your accuracy, so aim rather than spray.
  4. After 30 targets, read your average time per target, your fastest hit, total time and accuracy — then compare against the percentile bar.

About Aim Trainer

An aim trainer measures the combination of visual search and goal-directed movement that underlies every pointing action, from clicking a menu to landing a shot. The dominant factor is not reflexes but Fitts’s law: the time to move to a target is a logarithmic function of the distance divided by the target width. That is why a run of thirty targets across a wide stage produces such a consistent average for a given person, and why shrinking the targets raises the average in a predictable way.

Timing each target individually rather than dividing a total by thirty is what makes the numbers here trustworthy. It surfaces the distribution — your fastest hit, your slowest, the standard deviation — so you can see whether a good average came from steady aim or from a handful of very close spawns. Misses are counted separately from clicks that hit, so accuracy is reported as a real percentage rather than being silently folded into speed.

To improve, fix your sensitivity and leave it alone: most inconsistency comes from a mouse setting that changes between sessions, not from the hand. Aim with the whole arm for long movements and the wrist for short ones, keep the pointer near the centre of the stage between targets, and treat a rising standard deviation as the sign to stop — fatigue shows up as variability well before it shows up in the average.

What is a good average time per target?

With a mouse, most people average 550 to 650 ms per target. Under 500 ms is quick, under 400 ms is very quick, and consistent averages below 350 ms usually mean a high-refresh monitor and a well-tuned sensitivity as well as good aim. On a touchscreen, expect 100–200 ms slower.

How is the time per target measured?

From the moment a target is drawn to the moment you press on it, using performance.now(). That interval covers noticing the target, deciding where it is and moving the pointer there — the movement component is by far the largest, which is why target size and distance dominate the score.

Why do the targets get smaller?

To keep the run honest. A fixed target size lets you settle into a rhythm and stop aiming; shrinking targets force continuing precision, and they make the run a rough demonstration of Fitts’s law — the time to hit a target scales with the distance to it and inversely with its size.

Will this improve my aim in games?

It will improve your point-and-click accuracy, which is the foundation, but it is not a substitute for practising in the game you actually play. Tracking a moving target and flicking to a target that appears in your peripheral vision are different skills. What transfers most reliably is a consistent mouse sensitivity and a stable grip.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes — targets respond to touch as well as to a mouse, and the stage scales to the screen. Keep comparisons within the same device type, since finger travel and touch sampling make touchscreen averages systematically slower.
