About Number Memory Test
Digit span is the oldest measure in psychometrics still in daily use — Joseph Jacobs was running it on schoolchildren in 1887, and it has been part of intelligence batteries ever since. It survives because it is a nearly pure measure of the storage side of working memory: how much arbitrary, meaningless material you can hold in mind for a few seconds, without any of the reasoning that most cognitive tests smuggle in.
The visual, self-paced version used here typically produces slightly longer spans than the classic spoken one. When digits are read to you at one per second, you get one pass and no control over the rate. On a screen you can subvocalise, group and re-read, which recruits both the phonological loop and visual short-term memory. That makes it a better measure of practical memory strategy and a slightly softer measure of raw capacity, which is worth knowing when you compare a nine here with a nine from a clinical test.
The single most effective thing you can do to improve is chunking. Capacity in items is close to fixed, but the size of an item is not — an experienced runner who reads 3 5 2 as a race time has spent one slot where you spent three. That is also why a very high score usually reflects a practised technique rather than an unusual brain, and why comparing your own attempts over time is more meaningful than comparing yourself with a stranger.

How long is each number shown for?
The exposure scales with the load: 1.2 seconds for a single digit plus 0.5 seconds for every extra digit, so a ten-digit number is on screen for 5.7 seconds. Fixing the time instead would make long numbers impossible for everyone rather than difficult for most, and the progress bar shows exactly how long you have left.
Is a short digit span a sign of a memory problem?
Not on its own. Digit span is sensitive to tiredness, stress, noise and distraction, and a single low score on a web page says almost nothing. It is used in clinical batteries only as one subtest among many, interpreted by a professional alongside the rest. If your memory has changed noticeably in everyday life, that is a conversation for a doctor rather than a browser test.
How can I remember longer numbers?
Chunk them. Instead of nine separate digits, read 4 9 2 as "four ninety-two" and group the rest in threes — that turns nine items into three, comfortably inside anyone’s span. Rehearsing the chunks aloud keeps them in the phonological loop, and attaching meaning to a group (a year, an area code) makes it stick longer still.
