How to use Sequence Memory Test
- Press Start and watch the first square light up. Each square has its own tone, which you can mute at any time.
- Tap the squares back in the same order. Your level is the length of the longest sequence you reproduce correctly.
- Every successful round adds one square to the end of the sequence, and the flashes get slightly quicker as it grows.
- When you slip, the board shows which square came next and which one you actually tapped.
About Sequence Memory Test
Sequence memory loads the visuospatial sketchpad — the part of working memory that holds where things are and in what order — plus the executive attention needed to keep the order intact while new items arrive. It is the spatial counterpart of digit span, and the two correlate only moderately: plenty of people who hold twelve digits comfortably stall at level eight here, because the codes involved are genuinely different.
The version here follows Simon rather than the clinical Corsi procedure: the sequence extends by one item each round instead of restarting at a fixed length, so a single run gives you a threshold rather than a pass or fail. Flash duration shortens as the sequence grows so that a twenty-item run does not take two minutes, but it never drops below 220 ms, roughly the floor for reliably perceiving a discrete event.
The clearest way to improve is chunking, exactly as with digits. Beyond about seven items nobody is storing individual positions; the good scores come from seeing the pattern as two or three shapes, or from hearing it as a phrase of music. That is also why the tones matter — turn them on and most people gain a level or two, which is a neat demonstration of dual coding rather than any change in underlying capacity.

What is a good score on the sequence memory test?
Most adults finish somewhere between level 8 and level 10. Getting past level 12 is well above average, and scores in the high teens almost always involve chunking — grouping the pattern into shapes or rhythms rather than remembering nine separate taps.
Does the sound make it easier?
For most people, yes. Each square plays a distinct tone from a pentatonic scale, so the sequence becomes a short melody as well as a path. That gives you a second, auditory copy of the same information, and dual coding is one of the most reliable memory effects there is. Mute the tones if you want to test spatial memory alone.
Is this the same as the Corsi block-tapping test?
It is the same family. Corsi block-tapping — an examiner taps blocks and the participant repeats the order — is the standard clinical measure of visuospatial span, and Simon-style games are its consumer descendant. The differences are that this version is self-administered, adds a tone per position, and grows one item at a time rather than using fixed-length trials.
How do I get better at it?
Stop trying to memorise taps and start memorising shapes. Four squares in a row is one item, not four. Saying the positions aloud ("top-left, middle, corner") recruits verbal memory alongside spatial memory, and keeping your eyes still in the centre of the grid helps far more than following each flash with your gaze.
Do I need to install anything or allow sound?
No. The tones are synthesised in the browser with the Web Audio API rather than loaded as audio files, so nothing is downloaded and nothing plays until you press Start. If your browser does not support Web Audio, the test runs silently and everything else works as normal.
