How to use Visual Memory Test

  1. Press Start. Three squares flash on a 3×3 board — take a snapshot of where they are.
  2. Once they go dark, click each of those squares. Finding them all clears the level.
  3. Every level adds one square, and the grid grows to 4×4, 5×5 and beyond so the pattern never fills the board.

About Visual Memory Test

This is a test of simultaneous visuospatial span: how many locations you can hold as a single perceptual snapshot once the display is gone. It sits in the same family as the change-detection tasks used to estimate visual working memory capacity in the laboratory, where the classic finding is a limit of about four independent objects. Scores of ten and twelve here are not a contradiction — they are evidence of grouping, since a row of three adjacent squares costs one slot rather than three.

Because the board grows with your level, difficulty rises on two axes at once: more squares to hold, and more empty cells for them to hide among. Keeping the lit fraction under about 45% matters, since a nearly full board can be solved by remembering the handful of dark cells instead. The three-life structure means one lapse of attention does not end a run, so the score reflects your typical span rather than your worst moment.

Improvement here comes almost entirely from encoding strategy rather than from raw capacity. Fixating the centre instead of scanning, chunking adjacent squares into shapes, and giving the pattern a short verbal label all reliably add a level or two. The gain plateaus quickly, which is the honest lesson of most brain-training research: you get better at the task, and the transfer to everyday memory is far smaller than the marketing suggests.

Typical adult scores cluster around level 10 to 12, which means holding eleven or twelve positions at once. Reaching level 15 is strong, and past level 18 you are almost certainly encoding the pattern as shapes rather than as individual squares.

How long is the pattern shown?

One second plus 90 milliseconds per lit square, so a five-square pattern is visible for about 1.45 seconds and a twelve-square pattern for a little over two. That keeps the exposure proportional to the load rather than punishing higher levels twice over.

How is this different from the sequence memory test?

Order. Sequence memory asks you to reproduce positions in the order they appeared, which loads serial working memory. This test shows every square at once and does not care what order you click them in, so it measures simultaneous spatial span — closer to a mental snapshot than to a list.

What is the best strategy?

Look at the centre of the grid rather than at each square in turn, and let the pattern register as one shape. Then name what you saw — "an L on the left, two in the bottom corner" — because a verbal label survives the blank screen much better than a fading visual impression. Clicking the squares in the order you named them keeps your own recall on track.

Does the board really keep growing?

Yes, from 3×3 up to 8×8, on a schedule that keeps the lit squares below roughly 45% of the grid. Above that density the task quietly changes from remembering the lit squares to remembering the gaps, which is a different and much easier problem.
