How to use Verbal Memory Test

  1. Press Start. The first word is always new — mark it NEW.
  2. For every word after that, choose SEEN if it has already appeared in this run, or NEW if it has not. Use the buttons, or the ← and → arrow keys.
  3. Each correct call scores a point. Each mistake costs one of your three lives.

About Verbal Memory Test

This is a continuous recognition task, a paradigm that has been used since the 1960s to separate familiarity from recollection. Every item is both a test and a study trial: when you judge a word you also strengthen it, so the list you are being tested against is one you are simultaneously building. That self-interfering structure is what makes the task keep getting harder rather than simply longer, and it is why scores fall off sharply once a run passes a hundred words.

The sampling is deliberately adversarial. Repeat probability rises with the size of your seen-list, and repeats are drawn with a bias towards words shown long ago rather than words shown in the last few turns. Without that bias the test would reward a short-term buffer — remember the last dozen words and guess NEW for everything else — which would produce large scores that mean very little. With it, a high score genuinely reflects durable recognition across dozens of intervening items.

Two failure modes dominate. The first is a false alarm: a word feels familiar because it is common, not because you saw it here. The second is a miss late in a run, when attention slips for a single word. Because recognition memory is enormous — people can recognise thousands of images after one viewing — the limiting factor is rarely storage, it is the interference between similar traces and the discipline of judging each word rather than reasoning about it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good verbal memory score?

Most people last 35 to 60 words before three mistakes catch up with them. Scores above 90 are strong, and past roughly 140 the task is testing sustained attention at least as much as memory — one lapse at that point is usually what ends the run.

Why does it get so much harder?

Because the seen-list grows and every new word has to be checked against all of it. On top of that, repeats are drawn with a bias towards words you saw a long time ago, so you cannot coast on recency. The chance that any given word is a repeat starts near 28% and climbs towards 62% as your list fills.

What is the best strategy?

Do not try to hold the whole list. Instead give each new word a moment of distinctive processing — picture it, or link it to the word before — so it leaves a trace you will recognise later. Recognition memory is far larger than recall memory, so the feeling of familiarity is usually right; second-guessing it is what generates most mistakes.

Which words are used?

A pool of about 260 common English words, deliberately ordinary. Rare or striking words would be remembered for their novelty rather than through recognition, which would measure something else entirely. The pool is shuffled at the start of every run.

Does this measure the same thing as a vocabulary test?

No. Vocabulary tests measure crystallised knowledge — what you have learned over a lifetime. This measures recognition memory for material you encountered seconds or minutes ago, which is a working-memory and attention task that happens to use words as its material.
